Climate Resilience and Preparedness

Breathe Southern California (Breathe SoCal) works to strengthen local resilience by promoting clean energy solutions, emergency preparedness education, and equitable climate planning.

Climate change is already impacting Southern California through extreme heat, poor air quality, wildfires, drought, and severe weather events. Climate resilience and preparedness focus on equipping communities with the knowledge, tools, and infrastructure needed to withstand and recover from these challenges.

Preparing Communities for a Changing Climate

Disadvantaged communities often experience the greatest impacts from climate-related events due to higher pollution burdens, aging infrastructure, and limited access to resources.

Strengthening climate resilience can:

  • Reduce health risks during extreme heat and wildfire smoke events

  • Improve emergency preparedness and response capacity

  • Lower energy burden during peak demand periods

  • Prevent power outages and infrastructure strain

  • Protect vulnerable populations, including children, seniors, and outdoor workers

  • Build long-term environmental and economic stability

  • Preparing now reduces both human and financial costs in the future.

Why Climate Resilience Matters

We collaborate with community members, workforce partners, and local agencies to:

  • Provide education on emergency preparedness and air quality safety

  • Promote energy efficiency and clean energy solutions that reduce grid strain

  • Support EV adoption and clean transportation as part of climate mitigation efforts

  • Share information about cooling centers, air filtration, and heat safety practices

  • Advocate for investments in resilient infrastructure in overburdened communities

  • Connect residents to resources that reduce climate vulnerability
